Maths and Music

Maths and Music Did you know that many people believe there is a connection between a person's Mathematical and Musical aptitude? Studying an instrument can really help support the work you do with a Maths tutor. Conversely it is theorised that people who are tutored in Maths must be similarly adept with Music. So, Mozart must have been a master of Maths! Joking aside, many parents play Mozart to their babies so that they grow up to be great at Maths. Actually, the two subjects do harmonise perfectly. It might not seem obvious, but Musical theory is based on Maths. Each note is apportioned a specific place and value that must be counted out as it is played. Similarly, Musical time is presented as a fraction: 3 over 4 for a waltz, and so on. Children who study an instrument work with complicated Maths-based theory every time they play a piece of Music. When students of Music do Musical theory exercises, they are really doing a Maths paper set to Music. Identifying how many beats go into a bar of Music, for example, is a classic division exercise. They also might have to listen to Music, count along with it, and distinguish its time structure. Studies show that singing in particular really helps children along with their Maths. It could nurture real confidence, which is often lacking in Maths students. If you want to encourage your child to improve their Maths, why not consider hiring them a Music tutor as well as a Maths tutor? The two subjects can work wonderfully together.

Four Tips for Self-Editing Essays

Four Tips for Self-Editing Essays Sometimes in the interest of convenience, time, or money, it is necessary to read over and edit one's own essays instead of having someone else do it. Being able to efficiently edit your own work is a valuable skill. Here are a few tips for editing your essays that can result in your most polished piece of writing. 1. Read Your Work Out Loud There are some sentences that look fine on paper but sound awkward when you read them out loud. It's important to hear your writing so that you can identify and rework, or delete altogether, the phrases that don't flow smoothly. Read the entire piece out loud a few times until you no longer have strangely sounding parts. 2. Use an Onscreen Editing Tracker Editing essays can be tricky business, so it's good to keep track of what changes you have made during the process. You may delete some items only to later pick them up and move them to better section of the essay. There's nothing more frustrating than struggling in vain to remember what you erased if you decide you want it back. Make your life easier by tracking all of your changes. This way, you can rest assured that every word is safe and secure on the virtual clipboard. 3. Edit and Proofread Separately Although you may find yourself correcting a few misspelled words, a first edit should not be about fixing punctuation or grammar. Instead, make sure the sentence structure and general flow of the piece is as strong and captivating as possible. Once you've read it out loud and are satisfied with the way the writing sounds, start the process of thoroughly editing for spelling errors, grammar mistakes, and other issues. 4. Check Several Times Over Use a spell-checker at the beginning of your editing process to quickly get rid of the most glaring errors. Then, focus on reading aloud several times and reworking any trouble spots in the piece during each reading. Once you're done with the major editing, run another spelling and grammar check to review the changes and to catch anything that was missed in the first go-round.

5 Tips for Making Sure Your Band Doesnt Suck

5 Tips for Making Sure Your Band Doesnt Suck Suzy S. Today Paul McCartney announced his upcoming album, set for release on February 7th, featuring cover songs he deemed as key influences for his and John Lennons songwriting, as well as two new songs.   The album will come as an answer to the topic that Beatles fans have often analyzed, even four decades after the bands break-up: what exactly inspired the guys? Of course, despite their fame and fortune, the Beatles career wasnt always smooth sailing.   But if youre considering starting a band, its usually best to avoid the drama.   Here, check out advice from Ultimate-Guitar.com on starting and maintaining a band: Know your place Are you a lead guitarist full of great solos? That’s beautiful, just don’t start spamming solos where they don’t belong. Are you a rhythm guitarist? Good, then keep rhythm and don’t start doing whacky stuff. The same goes for everybody: know what you’re supposed to do, when you’re supposed to do it, and then do what you have to at the right time. A lot of people forget this. Criticize each other Don’t be afraid to point out mistakes, no matter how small. Chances are that whoever makes a mistake doesn’t even realize they do, until it gets pointed out. And be as blunt about it as you can. If someone can’t take the criticism, get rid of him/her. It sounds harsh, but its necessary. Nobody likes getting rid of a band member, but sometimes you just have to. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. Your band members are great people and good friends, if you’ve done things right so far, but sometimes they just don’t fit with your band. Learn to compensate for mistakes One important point when playing live is learning what to do when somebody makes a mistake. This is something you have to feel as a band, simply because you can’t go over every possible mistake during rehearsal. But something you shouldn’t do is try to catch up when you miss a beat, e.g. play the notes you should have played, only at the wrong time, to arrive back at where you are supposed to be at some point. Play something else, or play nothing at all and let your band handle it. A general rule is that if it sounds good, it’s not a big deal. The exception is a solo; these are usually really hard to pick up once you’ve made a mistake, and you can’t just stop playing. Usually, the only options you have are to accept that you messed up and just keep playing, or to signal the band to skip the solo in some way. Listen to your audience This can’t be stressed enough. Listen to all the feedback you get, negative or positive, and if they have a valid point, do something with it. Your audience listens to your music in an entirely different way than you do, so listen to what they have to say. You may feel you messed up, but chances are nobody even noticed. Or maybe you feel like you made no mistakes, but somebody noticed something after all. Make a good setlist This is more important than you might think. A setlist can make or break a performance. You need to make sure every song you play belongs in your setlist, and you need to put the songs in the right order. All this depends on the kind of music you play and what you’re going for as a band. Do you want to just start with a bang and get the audience going immediately? Start with a high-tempo song with a fast solo. Or maybe you want to get the audience going slowly, ease them into your performance? Then start with a nice, slow ballad. It’s all a matter of feeling things, trying things, and listening to what your audience said about past performances. Do what feels right, and think of what you would like to hear if you were in the audience. More often than not, its not only about how talented you are if you dont have a good rapport and friendship with your band members, it can end up a disaster.   Do you agree?   Let us know!   Leave a comment below. Should I Go to North Carolina State University at Raleigh

Should I Go to North Carolina State University at Raleigh Garrett earned his bachelors degree in Spanish Literature and Culture from North Carolina State University at Raleigh. He specializes in various levels of Spanish tutoring. Below, he shares his experience at North Carolina State University at Raleigh: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Garrett: North Carolina State University at Raleigh's campus is relatively compact. There are quite a few classroom buildings that are all really close together, meaning that just about everything is, at most, a 20-minute walk away. Located just outside of downtown Raleigh, the campus is pretty urban, and is not insulated from the occasional crime. Buses are available to ferry students to and from the various parking lots and apartment complexes located outside of the main campus. Having a car is handy for those who want to venture away from campus, and bikes are helpful for getting around just a bit faster. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Garrett:The professors are extremely responsive to students; they keep office hours at least one day out of each week and are quick to respond to emails. The advisers are helpful, as well, and NCSU does a good job of staffing their advising positions with people who have experience in the relevant field. My own adviser was actually one of my professors. Her in-depth knowledge of my coursework made her an excellent aid on my journey toward discovering what I wanted to do. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Garrett:The dorms at NCSU are very reminiscent of dorms at most colleges: small and cramped, usually with bathrooms shared among four or more people. Apartment complexes and lofts are available for those willing to pay extra. There are three different dining halls on campus, which are all-you-can-eat with a meal plan, and feature a decent amount of healthy options. Aside from dining halls, there are several specialty dining locations around campus that offer things like Japanese and Mediterranean food. Just about every other week there is some sort of outdoor event happening on campus, and these give plenty of opportunities for fun and socialization. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Garrett:NCSU is first and foremost an engineering school, so the mechanical and civil engineering majors are the best represented. That being said, there are many opportunities offered for other majors at NCSU as well. During my undergraduate career, I majored in Spanish and spent some time focusing on Spanish education. I learned a lot from this path of study, despite the engineering orientation of the university. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Garrett:As a commuter, I found it particularly difficult to make friends, especially during my freshman year. This was primarily due to the challenges of spending an hour commuting each way. However, that did not stop me from making some life-long friends, and the community in general seemed very close-knit. Greek life is very present and active at NCSU. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Garrett:The people at the Career Center are very helpful and receptive. I went there myself a few times, and they gave me very useful advice when changing my major and deciding what career paths would still be available to me. Aside from that, there are resume help staff always around, as well as several job fairs per semester, which attract a lot of good businesses willing and eager to hire recent graduates. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Garrett:The library at NCSU towers over the rest of the campus at eight stories high. It has an impressive amount of books available, as well as study spaces, computer stations, and even a film screening room. Besides that, each building, including the dorms, has space set aside for students who want to study or relax between classes. The study spaces are usually not loud or packed, and are also great for catching a nap every now and then. Describe the surrounding town. Garrett:NCSU is located directly on Raleighs Hillsborough Street, which has a nice handful of local coffee shops and international restaurants. The section of Hillsborough within walking distance, however, is relatively small, so options tend to be limited. Mostly, its a great place to go for lunch during the day. Since NCSU is located on the outskirts of downtown, students dont venture toward the center of Raleigh unless they have a vehicle to drive there. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Garrett:The student body at NCSU is exceptionally large. Every day I spent there I saw a face that I had never seen before, and I very rarely saw people that I recognized or was familiar with. This may be due, in part, to my commuter status. The class sizes for 100-level classes were huge, making it hard for professors to engage one-on-one with students. As the class levels increase and the curriculum becomes more difficult, the class sizes drop dramatically, feeling more like high school-sized classes. I thought this was a pretty good compromise, since the large student body would make it impractical to have every class be a small size. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Garrett:During my last semester, I took a poetry writing class just to fill some hours. I dont consider myself much of a poet, preferring to write short fiction, but it was the only creative writing class available. What seemed at first to be a chore ended up being my favorite class, as the entire class and professor bonded in a way that I thought only existed in movies. The whole class read poetry every day and often got lunch together, and we even threw a couple of poetry class parties. This class made my last semester my favorite by far, leaving me with a strong group of friends that help keep me feeling tied to NCSU. Check out Garretts tutoring profile. Combination Permutation - Math Online Tutoring

Combination Permutation - Math Online Tutoring Combination Formula is a useful tool. It helps to find a way to choose several things out of a large group. In combination order of things does not matter. The formula for combination is n! = n ( n 1 ) 2 ( 1 ) C ( n, r ) = n! / r! ( n r )! In case of permutation it is a tool to select objects in which order of objects matters. Formula for permutation is: nPk = n! / (n-k)! Example 1: How many ways can 6 students from a group of 10 are lined up for sports? Solution: There are 10P6 possible permutations for 6 students from 10 = 10P6 = 10! / (10 6)! = 10! / 4! = (10 x 9) x 8 x( 7 x 6) x 5 = 151200 Answer: There are 151200 ways 6 students from a group of 10 may be lined up for sports. Example 2: Computer the number of 5 car groups possible from a 50 collection of cars. Solution: There are 50 choose 4 possible combinations of 5 cars from total set of 50 in all. = Combination of 50 choose 5 is given as = 50! / 5! 45! = (50 x (49 x 48) x 47 x 46) / (5 x (4 x 3) x 2 x 1) = 5 x 49 x (4 x 47) x 46 = 2118760 Answer: There are 2118760 possible combinations of 5 cars possible from a set of 50 cars.

Minor Scales for Guitarists

(Source: Pexels)It’s the second mode of the major scale. A mode is defined by the intervals separating the fundamental and the different degrees. The interval is the distance between two notes: usually a tone or a semitone. On a guitar, a tone is usually separated by two frets and a semitone is separated by one fret.  To play a scale, you have to apply a mode. The minor relative scale is built from the 6th degree of the major scale. The six th degree of C is A.  To better understand a minor scale, you need to focus on the interval between the tonic (the first note) and the third. In the major scale, there are two tones in the interval whereas there are three semitones in the minor scale.  The minor third gives the minor scale a more melancholic feel whereas a major key feels more optimistic. To be fair, there’s no such thing as the minor scale. In fact, there are several minor modes that produce minor scales. All minor scales have an altered third. The other notes that are altered are the sixth and sevenths.  Each major scale has a relative minor scale, the scale that it shares all its notes with. The difference is in the order of the notes that are played. How Can You Recognise a Relative Minor Scale? The recognise a minor scale, you need to check that there are three semitones between the tonic and the third. When the third is minor, it’s almost always a minor scale. This is true of all minor relative scales. There are three minor scales each with their own structure: the natural, the harmonic, and the melodic, which we’re all going to look at in more detail.  The three minor scales are very similar. There are only a few differences between each of them. They’re very useful for improvising, composing, and also harmonising and making chords. The Natural Minor Scale on the GuitarThe natural minor scale is also called the Aeolian mode. This is the first minor scale you should learn.Work on your guitar playing whenever you can. (Source: FirmBee)Just like the major scale, the natural minor scale is made up of seven notes. There are 6 notes between the first and last notes. Each note is no more than a full tone apart (be it a tone or a semitone). Here’s the structure of the minor natural scale:I to II: A tone.II to III: A semitone.III to IV: A tone.IV to V: A tone.V to VI: A semitone.VI to VII: A tone.VII to I: A tone. There are two ways to remember the scale:1T - 0.5T - 1T - 1T - 0.5T - 1T - 1T2 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 2The second of these two methods is the intervals in the scale in terms of frets.  If you remember the structure, you can play the scale in any key. You should need to remember that certain notes will become either sharps or flats and vice-versa.  For example, the A minor scale is the following: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A.  These are exactly the same notes as in the C major scale. How to Practise the Natural Minor Scale on the GuitarIf you’re a beginner, focus on the fingering from the pentatonic scale, learning the rhythm, the basic chords, and barre chords. Come back to minor scales after you’ve studied the guitar for a while. It’ll be simpler! You'll need to study a bit to get the hang of scales. (Source: Free-Photos)Start by learning the structure of the natural minor scale.  Then try playing the scale by starting from any note on the neck, then across one or two strings, then on three, working your way up until you can play it across all six strings.  It’ s a great way to practise using your plectrum and your fingering with your left hand (the reverse if you’re left-handed).To improve your guitar playing, here’s a way to remember the C natural minor scale:1T - 0.5T - 1T - 1T - 0.5T - 1T - 1TC D Eb F G Ab B CThe reason we don’t say D# because you can’t have two Ds in the same scale, that’s why you say Eb (they’re the same notes, after all).  Try to do the same starting from F (answers at the end of the article). The Harmonic Minor Scale on the GuitarThis is the second most common one. You’ll inevitably come across a style of music that you’ll want to play and want to learn how to improvise and compose. In this case, you’ll want to learn a scale as useful as the minor natural scale. The minor harmonic scale is built on the minor natural scale.  There are three semitones between the tonic and the third. The main difference is that there’s a semitone difference on the seventh.  By starting from the A minor scale, the G will be altered: A B C D E F G# A.Here’s the structure of the minor natural scale:I to II: A tone.II to III: A semitone.III to IV: A tone.IV to V: A tone.V to VI: A semitone.VI to VII: Three semitones.VII to I: A semitone. To better understand, here are two ways to remember it:1T - 0.5T - 1T - 1T - 0.5T - 1.5T - 0.5T2 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 1This is a little complicated to remember but if you remember that it’s just the minor natural scale with the seventh raised by a semitone. You can also learn more about the chromatic scale. How Can You Practise the Minor Harmonic Scale? The principle is the same for the minor natural scale. You need to just keep practising at a slow pace with the help of a metronome and work your way up.  Your brain will take a bit of time to assimilate your new knowledge.Start with the C minor natural scale, here’s the C harmonic minor scale and adding a semitone to the seventh note: C D Eb F G Ab B C.Try to do the same starting from F (answers at the end of t he article). The Melodic Minor Scale on the GuitarThe minor melodic scale is even rarer in pop and guitar rock music it’s pretty common in metal, jazz, and even blues music. The melodic minor scale is useful in a number of different genres. (Source: dotigabrielf)To work out the minor melodic scale, you need to start with the minor melodic scale and augment the sixth.By starting with the A minor harmonic scale: A B C D E F# G# A.  The structure changes again:I to II: A tone.II to III: A semitone.III to IV: A tone.IV to V: A tone.V to VI: A tone.VI to VII: A tone.VII to I: A semitone. Here are a few ways to remember it:1T - 0.5T - 1T - 1T - 1T - 1T - 0.5T2 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1In comparison to the minor natural scale, the minor melodic scale has the sixth and seventh notes raised by a semitone.  It’s quite easy to remember the minor natural scale and then transform it into the minor harmonic scale and the minor melodic scale. You could also get guitar lessons London! How Can You Prac tise the Minor Melodic Scale? The minor melodic scale is very similar to the major scale.Consider the A major scale (A B C# D E F# G# A) and the A minor melodic scale (A B C D E F# G# A).  It’s almost the same! The only difference is that the third is a semitone lower in the minor melodic. You can work on the minor melodic alongside the major scale.  For the C minor melodic scale, start with the C minor harmonic scale, and increase the sixth by a semitone. You’ll end up with: C D Eb F G A B C.Try to do the same starting from F (answers at the end of the article).  Practise transposing scales to other keys. Work on them regularly and don’t forget to never give up.If you want to become an expert at the guitar, you just have to keep practising! Here are the answers from earlier:F minor natural scale: F G Ab Bb C Db Eb FF minor harmonic scale: F G Ab Bb C Db E FF minor melodic scale: F G Ab Bb C D E FDid you get it?Whether you're interested in playing guitar solos, want to play guita r in a band, do a few licks, or create better chord progressions, every guitar player should learn to play scales.Whether you want beginner guitar lessons, to study intermediate guitar techniques, or master some blues licks, there are plenty of great online guitar resources to get you through learning scales and improving your guitar playing.Additionally, if you need help with a chord progression, fingering, strumming, or how to read tablature, you should consider enlisting the help of a private guitar tutor.Private tutors tailor their lessons to their students so if you whether you want to learn blues guitar, jazz guitar, or rock guitar, your tutor can focus on the guitar licks and riffs that can help you learn how to play guitar in the style that you're interested in.A lot of the tutors on Superprof offer their first guitar lesson for free.
